"Ain't nothin' gonna break my stride; Nobody gonna slow me down, oh no; I got to keep on movin'"

GENERAL

NAME: Asher Aleris Guthrie
NICKNAMES: Ash, pretty much. But call him whatever you want and he'll probably respond.
AGE/DOB: 17 ; Feb. 23
BLOOD STATUS: Half-blood
GENDER/PRONOUNS: Male ; he/him
SEXUALITY: Though horribly opposed to labels, he supposes he'd go with bisexual.
HOMETOWN: New York City, New York

CONCEPT: Passionate but calm observer hellbent on making the best damn school newsletter.

PHYSICAL

APPEARANCE: A relatively casual dresser; he's not trying to stand out, and wants to be practical in his clothing choices. His uniform is always wrinkle-free and worn with all pieces, except when the heat is a little too much. Despite being quiet he's almost always smiling.

HEIGHT: 5'11"

PB: Justin Kelly

PERSONALITY

LIKES: Reading (primarily non-fiction). Karaoke. Singing of any kind, really. Libraries. Quiet spaces. Animals (Bridgette especially). School. Music (80s pop is best, obvs). The outdoors and nature. The city.

DISLIKES: Too much attention. Bullies. Dancing (Sort of. Kind of.). Physical fighting. Labels. People with superiority complexes. Elitism.

PERSONALITY:

Asher is a relatively quiet, sensitive, and introspective boy and generally has been for the most of his life with those he's not close to. Much the polar opposite of his very public parents, he prefers to observe and stay quietly in the background (except when it comes to karaoke). Because of this he's generally good at reading people and often takes it upon himself to diffuse situations if they've gone too far in his eyes. His near eidetic memory makes him a somewhat lazy student in terms of studying, but he works hard on technical skills since he prides himself on his academics. Much like his parents, he's highly driven in the aspects of his life he finds important.

He's eternally a fan of the underdog because he identifies with them in some ways, especially because of bullying he endured as a child. His strong dislike of labels feeds into this as well - he often finds people using labels to form cliques and create unnecessary animosities, or use their identifiers as a way to act superior. He's very realistic about the fact that people and things rarely fit into tidy little boxes, and sees the beauty in the complexities of human nature. He's become increasingly level-headed over the years and tries to not let the small bit of temper he has rear its ugly head ever. He can sometimes come off as nosy as he attempts to understand people and find material for his newsletter, but he has a serious respect for personal privacy and honors requests to drop subjects without batting an eyelash.

Though Asher generally presents to those he doesn't interact with much as just a quiet background character, once he's close with someone his true goofy side comes out. He's snarky, excitable, and seriously driven to get a good newsletter out, even though he's quite aware that it might just be going straight into the recycling bin for most. His love of singing is another part of his often unseen silly side - he's a big fan of most kind of music, especially pop, and will often serenade his friends with ridiculous songs when in private. If he's really into singing he'll also dance with skill reminiscent of a small child.

Despite his lurking silliness, Asher is also a huge romantic. He loves to dote on whoever he's with, and even finds arguments to be a meaningful part of relationships that he appreciates. Currently he's a little pessimistic and suspicious of relationships however because of a recent break-up, something that frustrates him deeply but he's unlikely to share, even with his closest friends. In fact, he's rather hesitant to share any of his problems with anyone, wanting to remain a calm rock for those around him.

Notes:
+ Rarely takes notes when interviewing due to his memory which can throw people off.
+ Writes in all of his textbooks and is a notorious margin doodler.
+ He may or may not silently associate people and their relationships with songs. (Spoiler, he has theme songs for everyone)

HISTORY

FAMILY MEMBERS:

Crystal Morningglow
Mother | President and CEO of Crystal Cosmetics
Crystal is a driven woman who took her father's failing, local magic cosmetics business and built a nationwide empire that now caters to both the magical and non-magical. Because of her success she's kept her maiden name, but she's 100% invested in her family when she's not running her empire. She loves attention. She especially revels in the irritation she causes many others that run in the magical elite circle with her; after all, she's new money and married a Muggle. Her company's tagline is: "Crystal Cosmetics - for that extra morning glow"

Aaron Guthrie
Father | TV News Anchor
Aaron knew nothing of the magical world before he met Crystal. Raised in upstate New York, he moved to the city at a young age to pursue his dream of becoming a news anchor. While working his way up the food chain he interviewed rising star Crystal, and the rest is history. A pragmatic man, he can be a little blunt and hard to get to know. He's very driven just like his wife.

Aiden Guthrie
Brother | Gooseberry Student
He's Aiden! He also goes to Gooseberry! They had to rebuild their relationship somewhat after Asher left for boarding school in upstate New York when he was 12, but since they go to the same school now there's time for that.

HISTORY:

Asher was born in New York City, New York and from a young age found the hustle and bustle of the large and diverse city fascinating. By the time he was born his mother had already built up her business, so he was in the lap of luxury from a young age. Though his parents both worked, Crystal would often bring her young children into the office with her where Asher, already quiet and observant in his ways, studied people day in and day out. Because of his somewhat shy nature he spent very little time around other children until he began school. Most of his childish focus was on publishing a family newsletter he called The Guthrie Gazette, as he had his father's fascination for news without the desire to be in the public eye.

For the first 3 years of his education he attended a local public wizarding school in Manhattan where he lived, but it didn't take long for him to show a high level of intelligence (he has a near eidetic memory). He was thus accepted to Phoenix Heights Prep, his mother's alma mater, for exceptional (and rich) witches and wizards. This is where the trouble began - populated by quite a few pure blood children who were not only offended by Asher's family but also jealous of his intelligence, he soon became a target for bullying. Taunted for his Muggle father and told he only was accepted to the school because of his mother's money (ironic given they were often attending because of a bit of monetary lubrication), Asher endured the mental and occasionally physical attacks with as much patience and strength as he could muster. The whole while he kept silent on the issue to both his parents and teachers, hoping the children would eventually simply give up and leave him alone if he didn't react.

At age 12, however, he finally snapped and got into a rather nasty fight with a fellow student that resulted in the other boy's arm broken and his front teeth shattered. Asher himself was bloodied and bruised, but the extent of damage to his opponent lead to a much harsher punishment leveled against him - expulsion. He finally explained the situation to his parents, and while they weren't thrilled they understood and apologized for not realizing he was in such a difficult situation on their own. Originally Asher was slated to return to his old public school, but his parents thought it might be best for him to distance himself and go to a boarding school instead. Asher agreed without argument and left for Magicrest Academy in upstate New York near where his father grew up.

At his new school he did much better - the student body was more diverse and unless he told someone most were unaware of his parentage. Thus his talents were nurtured and grew, and he turned his passion for people watching into a focus on journalism. He settled in well with his peers and learned to manage the anger in him that he hadn't even realized existed until it had burst. Though a bit hesitant to leave such a comfortable school the draw of Gooseberry was enough to get him to apply, and once he was accepted he took a brief trip home before heading to Utah.

He began as a freshman at Gooseberry and much to his relief once again found an environment much more suited to him than his prep school had been. Freshman year he began self publishing a school newsletter every other week, and maintained this rigorous schedule for himself alongside classes for his entire first year. Sophomore year, however, he began dating a Junior girl in Ribbonfin and his focus was upset. The newsletter began being published only once a month, and then eventually not at all, as he put most of his focus into his girlfriend Seraphina and into choir, an actual commitment he had made to others. When she graduated Asher assumed they would continue their relationship, but a month into the summer she broke up with him. Heartbroken, Asher withdrew from others for the rest of the summer before beginning his senior year, utterly focused on putting his emotional pain to work in the form of publishing the best school newsletter Gooseberry had ever seen.

SCHOOL

YEAR: Senior
HOUSE: Ribbonfin
SORTING: Despite having a streak of Coppertale in him Asher's generally even temper and attempt to smooth over disagreements made him the most suited to Ribbonfin.
WAND: Sequoia, ent leaves, 12.25". Rigid.
FAMILIAR:
Bridgette is as calm (though not as quiet) as Asher, but significantly more nosy. She enjoys snooping around Gooseberry, often finding herself in other cabins. She always comes back every night to sleep in Asher's bed with him, however, and the two seem to share some sort of deep connection allowing her to inexplicably always locate him. She was a present from his mother when he left for boarding school.

CLASSES: History of Magic. Hermeticism. Transfiguration. Charms. Wizard Literature. Magizoology. Astronomy. Animagus Studies (Rather large, fluffy grey tabby cat with green eyes).
SENIOR PROJECT: Writing a compendium of Gooseberry history. Though the school itself is not that old, Asher is interested in getting a full account of Septima Vector's life, the students that have passed through Gooseberry, and any information he can gather on the surrounding forest's mysteries.
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: Excellent. Asher's near-photographic memory certainly helps him with anything involving memorization, but he spends a lot of time on his technical skills to ensure he does well.
EXTRACURRICULARS: School newsletter (not school sponsored and, currently, consisting of just him). Choir.
